Take a moment to check out the labels on a few common items found in bathrooms and medicine cabinets in most American homes.

• Look at the label on the back of that toothpaste tube. Perhaps you, like most of us, are astonished to discover a Poison Control emergency number. Toothpaste – a substance designed to be used inside the mouth – should NOT be swallowed.
• Deodorants – for underarms and other intimate areas – often contain nasty substances, including fragrances and artificial coloring, which can be absorbed through the skin and are toxic to the body. Remember the propellants in aerosol cans which are released with every use? We breathe them in at every point of use.
• Body powder and lotions help make us feel good – smooth and dry or barely moist – but most of them also contain artificial dyes in addition to fragrances. It’s also difficult to apply a decent layer of dusting powder without getting a good whiff of it.
• We wash and dry our bodies with fabric washcloths, hand and bath towels. We stand on bath mats and push aside shower curtains - all made of fabrics laundered using detergent, bleach and fabric softeners.
• Chemicals are used to clean all the surfaces in the bathroom – porcelain, counters, mirrors and even the floor. We come in contact with all those surfaces which have been wiped down with chemicals, many of which we then absorb through the skin.
